baby safety (choking hazards) Chapter 2

Baby Safety (Choking Hazards) CHAPTER 2

As young, new mothers and father you may all be very on edge always checking on your newborn to make sure they are okay. While this is completely normal it can also be very stressful and tiring, we all know becoming a new parent drains everything possible out of you so we would like to give you some ideas to make the thing that can be very stressful just a little bit less so.

Types of safety
  • prevention from cuts and or bruises from things around the house. (chapter one)
  • prevention from choking hazards (chapter two)
  • prevention from damaging substances such as cleaning liquids and medications (chapter three)
  • prevention from suffocation during nap and sleep time (chapter four)

Choking hazards are everywhere for your baby and this is a main reason that you have to be so vigilant with your child. First step is preventing.

Things you can do the prevent choking hazards:
  • Read labels from your children's toys! this may seem like a step that we shouldn't need to mention but we don't just mean the toys you buy. EVERYTHING needs to be checked, did aunty buy baby a new toy, check the recommended age if it says 36 months and over and your child is only 30 months old then put that toy up high until your baby is old enough.
  • Inspect your child's toys regularly, even your child's teddy bears. What if one of the eyes has come loose because your baby has been chewing on the teddy? This is now a choking hazard-  either remove the eye or take the teddy away for the safety of your baby.
  • If you are in a different setting to your home be extra vigilant with what your child is doing and try to stop them from putting anything in their mouth that you haven't given them. (this is good practice anyway because your child may be putting a toy in their mouth that another child has does the same with this is likely to cause them to be ill, as baby's immune systems are underdeveloped.)
What to do if your baby is choking?

  • First call emergency services 999/911 or whatever it is in your area. they may guide you what to do.
  • Put your baby on your lap lying on its tummy with its legs around your waist, the baby's head should be below the feet so the child is on a sloping angle as seen in the picture.
  • Make sure your infants throat is not pressured as this will obstruct the object that is causing your baby to choke.
  • Slap your baby's back with the heal of your hand. do not be scared to hurt our child as a little pain is better than your baby choking.
  • Repeat previous step five times.
  • Turn your baby over so they are in the same position but facing upwards.
  • Place your fingers in the middle of your infants chest just below their nipples and give a chest thrust.
  • Repeat previous step five times.
  • If your baby isn't breathing still or the object is still stuck turn them over again and repeat.

chock proof toys!

(although these toys are very safe as we have said previously, frequently check your children's toys for wear and tear)
